What are Walking Onions?

Walking onions are perennial onions that return and multiply year after year. Instead of producing a typical flower head, they develop clusters of small bulbs, called topsets, at the top of tall stalks. As the topsets grow heavier, the stalks can bend toward the ground, where the bulbs may take root and grow into new plants — giving walking onions their name.

  • Early spring growth

    Green shoots emerge early in spring, often before many other garden plants begin growing.

  • Topsets Form on Tall Stalks

    Small bulbs, called topsets or bulbils, form on top of tall stalks. As they mature, they can reach the ground and grow into new plants nearby, or they can be collected and planted elsewhere.

  • Multiply Year After Year

    Over time, multiple bulbs form at the base of the plant, creating new growth and allowing the original planting to gradually develop into a larger patch.
