What are Walking Onions?

Walking onions are a unique onion variety that grows and multiplies year after year. Instead of flowering, they produce small bulbs on top of tall stalks. As the bulbs grow heavier, the stalk bends, allowing them to “walk” and replant nearby. At the base of the plant, multiple bulbs form over time and can be divided as the clump expands.

  • Early spring growth

Green shoots emerge early each spring, often before many other garden plants.

  • Bulbs Form on Top

Small bulbs form on top of tall stalks. These bulbils can fall and grow into new plants nearby or be collected and planted.

  • Cluster of Red Catawissa walking onion bulbs on top of the soil, ready to be divided for replanting

    Naturally Multiply

Over time, multiple bulbs form at the base of the plant and may become visible at the soil surface, creating dense clumps that eventually need dividing.
